Crazy Facts About Bulldogs That You May Not Know – Dog Crazzzy

As I sit here writing this article, I can’t think of another dog breed that I love more than the bulldog.

With their chunky body, squishy face and awkward walk, bulldogs are by far the most adorable dogs, in my opinion.

After thinking about these magnificent animals, it got me wondering, what are some things about bulldogs that I don’t know? So I started to do some research and here I am writing an article about some crazy facts about bulldogs that I didn’t know (slow clap).

Bulldogs Were Bred to Fight Bulls

facts about bulldogs

Okay, what the heck! Why would people ever want to see such a beautiful, chubby, majestic animal fight a bull?

Well, back in the 1800s bulldogs were used for what is called bull baiting.

The definition of bull baiting is as follows, “the practice of setting dogs to harass and attack a tethered bull, popular as a sport in medieval Europe.”

Bull baiting has been banned since 1835 and I am glad to see it has ceased to exist!

Bulldogs are just too damn cute to be fighting no big-ol bull with their huge horns and crap!

Let’s move on to other facts about bulldogs, geesh.

Bulldogs Are Popular

I love dogs and so when I did my research on these facts about bulldogs (believe me I did my research), I found out that bulldogs are a pretty popular breed.

Who would’ve thunk it? Bulldogs are popular?

Actually, Bulldogs are the 6th most popular breed in America and if you were to take a one-way-trip over to Los Angeles, California, you would probably see a bulldog on almost every corner.

That is because bulldogs are the #1 dog breed in Los Angeles and in my opinion, Los Angeles just got 10 times more attractive and now I am glad I looked up these facts.

There Are 39 American Universities That Use The Bulldog As Their Mascot As Well As The United States Marine Corps

Did I mention bulldogs are popular? Oh yeah, I did.

Go bulldogs!

As far as popularity, we’ve already discussed that they are the 6th most popular breed in America, but when it comes to being a mascot, the bulldog takes the cake!

If you revert to wikipedia, they state that 39 American Universities as well as The United States Marine Corps, use the bulldog as their mascot.

Now that’s saying something!

The bulldog is also used to represent England and the United Kingdom.

Hats off to you, bulldog named Chunker.

Bulldogs have a hard time swimming

Since bulldogs fall into the brachycephalic category, it is easy to understand why they have a hard time swimming.

The definition of brachycephalic is having a relatively broad, short skull (usually with the breadth at least 80 percent of the length).

Meaning that bulldogs are fatheads, just like me.

I have found that since bulldogs have short, turned out legs, it really make it harder for them to gain any momentum in the water, therefore, swim any lengths of distance.

It’s best to just keep your bulldog happy and get him a little kiddie pool (or make one yourself).

Happy bulldog, happy life! Right?

Wait, don’t answer that.

Most Airlines Have Banned Bulldogs From Flying

Did you know that bulldogs have suffered the most airline deaths of any dog breed out there? Isn’t that insane?

This is something that I was sad to stumble upon when I was doing my research for this article.

Apparently, since bulldogs suffer from respiratory and heat regulatory issues, it has caused for some sad scenarios to be played out, and their has been a few losses of dog lives in the air.

Since there has been so many bulldog deaths on airplanes, many airlines have banned them from flying.

It’s very sad to have read and researched this, but I wanted to raise awareness of this so that this doesn’t happen to your poor pup.

Bulldogs Started In England

Get yourself a good ol’ crumpet and tea and kick your feet up for this fact.

Bulldogs started in England. Yep, they sure did. These dogs weren’t around forever and they actually were bred into existence.

Bulldogs were actually first bred in England as a cross between the pug and the mastiff.

And so, I want to tip my hat to England and say thank you for creating such a beautiful dog that we can all love!

Bulldogs Are Adorable

Alright, I know, this isn’t a fact. It’s just my opinion!

And if we go back to the paragraph about popularity I bet it’s your opinion too! At least, if you live in Los Angeles!

I just wanted to throw this in there because I love these animals and I think they are one of the cutest dog breeds out there!

A lot Of Bulldogs Aren’t Born Naturally

Did you know that some 80% (or more) of bulldogs are born via c-section due to the size of the animals head?

Since bulldogs are brachycephalic the act of having them naturally can be too painful or impossible for the mama bulldog.

This is something that I figured to be true but I also made sure to look this up because you can never trust what’s on the internet, right?

To Conclude These Facts About Bulldogs

Bulldogs, have a hard time swimming, they’re popular, they work well as a mascot and they should probably stay away from airlines but the most important fact of all is that bulldogs are adorable (screw it, it’s a fact).

If you are looking at getting a bulldog that you will love and cherish forever, I say go for it!

These animals need someone to love and care for them like they deserve!
